Happy New Year (and a new little island!)

Just a quick post and a few snaps to kick off the new year, and a new island bagged today, St Mary's Island, just a couple of hundred metres of tidal causeway away from the Northumberland Coast at Whitley Bay. It's the third island I've now been to with this name, following others in Scilly and Chatham, but there's not a great deal else to say. We managed to fit an hour into our hectic new years schedule in the North East to get across, but the lighthouse was closed and there's not much else to do, so we contented ourselves with looking for crabs and trying not to slip over on the seaweedy rocks. Apparently there used to be a pub on the island, but it got shut down for being too rowdy, and the sign said that unlicensed fishermen were only allowed to catch up to five prawns a day. No cocktails for anyone it seems.

Here's to an island-tastic 2014!
